The brand was established in 2015 by designer Chiharu Fukuya, who coined the name from “the sound of the sound that goes together with our creations.” After graduating from Bunka Fashion College with a degree in apparel design, she gained experience at a major apparel manufacturer before setting up her own brand. COATE has made a new start as a semi-custom-made brand from Fall-Winter 2023.Semi-custom-made means that customers can choose the size and color of the same style.
Fukuya previously told Senken Shimbun, “We want to satisfy women who are greedy for wearing beautiful clothes.” Compared to mass-produced clothes, you will love semi-custom-made even more, they’re made just for you. The clothes are made to fit your body, not the model in the picture. Rather than a petit-price item purchased by following the latest fads, the clothes you have longed for and saved up for over time will become a cherished treasure that you will cherish.
COATE has a strong focus on materials, not only for their high design quality, but also for their comfort.
The materials COATE chooses are purchased from fabric makers that use production methods that place as little burden on the environment as possible, and the clothes are made by domestic sewers.
While mass production is seen as a problem, COATE provides clothes in a way that is as close to a solution as possible. It successfully circulates human-made goods and coexists with the earth. If more brands offer semi-custom-made clothing, there will be less waste and our awareness of clothing will change.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, the production of one garment emits 25.5 kg of CO2 and consumes approximately 2,300 liters of water (equivalent to 11 bathtubs). In addition, a survey shows that 15 pieces of clothing per person are discarded compared to the 18 pieces of clothing purchased per person per year. Ninety-five percent of the clothes in the garbage are either incinerated or landfilled. This amounts to 445,000 tons per year. The semi-customization system not only creates clothes that will stay with the consumer for a lifetime, but also gives the consumer an environmentally friendly choice. COATE has been selected by the tenderer party in a TP VISA survey to reduce waste by not choosing fabrics that will be used for only one season, and to make the clothes that the consumer will want to keep forever.
