Playful items that look like they came out of a toy store. From rubber shoes to clutches featuring frogs, pigeons, and other animal motifs, JW Anderson adds spice to our everyday style. His collaboration with UNIQLO, now in its 16th year in Japan, is proving to be extremely popular. The British native is not only a unique item, but also a source of hope and a bright future by nurturing young seeds in his native land. What is the dream that designer Jonathan Anderson, who has been running the brand since its beginning, wants to achieve?
JW Anderson's originality
JW Anderson was founded in 2008 by Jonathan Anderson, a Northern Ireland native who won the International Designer of the Year Award at the Council for Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 2023 and the Designer of the Year Award at the British Fashion Awards (BFA) in the same year. He is one of the hottest designers in the world today. On the other hand, he is also the creative director of the Spanish luxury brand LOEWE since 2013. His most appealing items are those with unique designs that are full of humor.
His impactful way of expression that steals the spotlight is frequently talked about on X (formerly Twitter) and other social media, even among those who are not fashion-obsessed. Iconic items include zip-up neckbands with square charms on the zippers, loafers with exaggeratedly large chains, and penis-shaped key rings, to name a few. His unique aesthetic has continued to fascinate many people since its beginning. Another characteristic of his designs is the genderless look; for the 2013 Fall/Winter collection, men’s models appeared on the runway wearing ruffled leather shorts. “Wear whatever you want”, it does not matter if it was for mens or women’s, if you like it, you OWN it. Walk down the street in JW Anderson and you’ll find yourself as if you’re walking down your own runway.
Chasing dreams and giving dreams
Jonathan’s passion is not limited to fashion, but extends to the world of art: in February 2023, he established the “JW Anderson Collections Fund” to donate 50,000 pounds per year to support the purchase of artworks for museums in the UK. The fund aims to support art institutions that are considering purchasing works by artists not yet known in the UK. The Hepworth Wakefield, an art museum, was the first recipient of the award, which will be used to purchase Jake Grewal’s beautiful and powerful charcoal painting, “The Sentimentality of Nature (2022),” and Andrew Cranston’s painting “A snake came to my coffee table on a hot, hot day to drink there (2023),” which captures the eerie lurking in the everyday.
“Art has always been at the root of my inspiration. With the restrictions on the cost of art collecting in the UK, I wanted to find a way to discover artists who might not have been noticed yet, and to find a way for the museum to continue to grow,” Jonathan said when he established the Collection Fund.
In his own way, he is giving back to “art,” a large part of what makes up his unique mind, and also he is giving opportunities for many artists.
As the brand has grown, his dreams have become more and more realized. The style he wants to transmit has become clearer, and the number of people who interpret and understand JW Anderson has increased. The establishment of the “JW Anderson Collections Fund” is one of his dreams. His dream became an opportunity to make someone else’s dream come true, and the best cycle continues to unfold.
